A99a: Below a wide painted band with hanging half-circles. Shows the mast, masthead with two deadeyes, a furled sail, and two backstays or lifts on the left side. To the right, remains of forecastle with a warrior wielding a shield standing on top of it. The horizontal line below the rings is the yard of the sail, with the hanging semicircles representing a brailed-up sail. Fighting warrior facing left, equipped with a body shield of "Hittite" type standing on a platform (Borchhardt 1977, EI 15-17). Execution is very schematic.

A99b: Fragment of the same vase showing helmeted warrior carrying the same type of Hittite shield in an attitude and armour similar to the main Kynos krater. Figure appears to stand below the construction behind him, possibly a rail or a bulwark. If this interpretation is correct, the warrior must be standing in the hull of an undecked ship. The helmet possibly finds a parallel in a LHIIIC fragment from Tiryns, and seems composed of a low profile cap and a very long neck protection.
